Do I require previous travel experience?

You do not need to have visited Florence previously, but previous travel experience in Europe would be very helpful. While we provide lots of suggestions and guidance, this is not a start-to-finish guided tour. You will be expected to find some meeting points on your own, so some travel experience in navigating European cities or using maps would be very beneficial. That said, Florence is small compared to cities like Rome or Paris, and is easily navigable by foot.

Do I require previous art history knowledge?

No! Just a keen interest! We will recommend helpful readings if you would like to prepare in advance. This is a small group, so questions are welcome and encouraged. There is time also to re-visit sites if you or others in the group have additional questions or queries.

How much walking is involved? How fit do I need to be to participate?

Florence is a small city and sites are within walking distance from our hotel. Expect to cover 7-8 km over the course of the day. We will often be walking at a leisurely pace and pausing to talk, but miles accumulate quickly! There will also occasionally be some stairs to climb. Moderate walking fitness is required.

Sarah and Caleb are avid proponents of the coffee/pastry break. There will be lots of those.

What do I wear?

Modest dress (long sleeves and covered knees) are required for visits to religious sites. Late-September to early-October features comfortable weather: long-sleeves or a light jacket may be needed in the evenings.

Comfortable walking shoes are necessary.

WhIch meals are included with the fee?

All breakfasts are included in the fee and provided at the Palazzo. Five evening dinners are also provided. These are multi-course meals and wine is included. Lunch is on your own.

Who will be there from Jones Gallery?

Lectures are led by Jones Gallery Curator, Sarah Jones. Jones Gallery Director, Caleb Jones, will also be on hand for guidance and support.

Do you know Florence very well?

We do! Sarah studied there for a bit in university, and she and Caleb have visited several times since.

Note: Sarah has been to Florence more times than Caleb, but Caleb has spent more time in Italy than Sarah (a milestone which he just passed in 2019).

Will you be providing recommendations for things to do or see on our free time, and places to snack/eat?

Yes! We have loads of ideas and suggestions.
