JONES GALLERY OPENS ITS EXHIBITION SEASON WITH DAN XU’S ‘BAY OF FUNDY’
GALLERY HOSTS FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION AT ITS NEW LOCATION
SAINT JOHN, N.B. March 11, 2019 – Jones Gallery is pleased to present Bay of Fundy, a solo exhibition by Saint John-based artist Dan Xu.
Xu is trained in traditional Chinese painting; her work features delicate ink and wash applied with wool brush on Chinese xuan paper. After immigrating to Canada in 2001 from China, Xu applied her training and perspective to the Maritime landscape. For her new exhibition at Jones Gallery, she has turned to landscape surrounding the Bay of Fundy.
Xu’s approach is simultaneously ethereal and grounded. Viewers will readily identify iconic landmarks and known features of the Fundy landscape - Hopewell Rocks, for instance, are featured prominently - but other parts of her paintings are looser, less identifiable, and interpretive. There is fluidity in her perspective. Sometimes space is compressed or expanded to suit the artist’s interest or intent. Xu often works on site, giving her work a sense of immediacy and relevance.
Bay of Fundy is comprised of several new large-scale works on paper, the largest of which is a massive 4.5’x12’ painting of Hopewell Rocks at low tide.
Xu’s Bay of Fundy is the first solo exhibition held at Jones Gallery’s newly expanded location at 1 Charlotte Street. Xu is one of the gallery’s carefully selected group of represented artists. The gallery focuses on painting, sculpture and installation-based work by emerging and mid-career Atlantic Canadian artists. Their artists, Xu among them, have a strong conceptual component to their work and a challenging visual practice, and with an ongoing record of public exhibition.
Jones Gallery wants to commit to regular and ambitious solo exhibitions, in which one artist is given the entire gallery space for a set period of time. Solo exhibitions are a key part of programming at commercial galleries in larger centres, and are an important staple of an artist’s career, giving him/her a much-needed opportunity to flex both creativity and professionalism. Jones Gallery intends to hold eight to nine such solo exhibitions per year.
Dan Xu’s Bay of Fundy will be held from March 14 to April 4, 2019, with an opening reception on Thursday, March 14th, 5-7 p.m., at Jones Gallery, 1 Charlotte Street, Saint John, NB. The reception is free and open to the public; refreshments will be provided.
