My folks gave me Ross King's latest book on the Group of Seven - Defiant Spirits - for Christmas. I've started reading through it today, and of course, being Ross King, it's just awesome. I want to be reincarnated with Ross King's brain and writing style.
I highly recommend his previous books for anyone looking to delve into art historical literature. The Judgment of Paris looks at nineteenth century French art (Courbet, lots of Manet and a little bit of Monet) and Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling is a thorough telling and analysis of the Renaissance artist's execution of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
