Sarah recently opened her art studio as Jones Gallery at 122 Germain Street, Saint John, NB, and was nominated in the Emerging Artist category for the inaugural Saint John 225 Arts Awards Gala in June 2010.

Sarah graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Art History from Queen's University in Fall 2009, and was a recipient of the prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) graduate research grant. This informal lecture covers the brilliant Renaissance and Baroque periods of Roman art through the work of Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini and Caravaggio. Learn about the sometimes-stormy relationships between these artists and their patrons, their sometimes-deadly mishaps, and how their art and architecture irrevocably changed the face of Rome.

This lecture is given by artist and art historian Sarah Jones, and is illustrated with images from Sarah’s art historical studies in Rome.

Join artist and art historian Sarah Jones for an informal lecture on the art of nineteenth-century France – Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism. Learn about the French Academy’s iron-fisted hold on art production against the backdrop of the stormy French politics of the 1800s, and how the new young artists like Courbet, Manet, and Monet defied the system and launched a controversial new era of art.

Controversial Artwork: 1000 Years of Bans, Bonfires, & Protests. Saint John Arts Centre, Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:30, May 5-26. Contact SJAC at 633-4870 to register.

This survey workshop focuses on art that caused a stir – paintings, sculptures and architecture that have riled up royalty, politicians and patrons over the past one thousand years. Artist Sarah Jones (MA Art History, Queen’s University) leads an interactive discussion on the history of art controversies, from racy medieval gargoyles to the current debate on valuing contemporary art, and explores the dramatic clash between art, morality and politics. Every class is fully illustrated with artwork images and photographs.
